One of the highlights of my summer was a dinner hosted by a colleague. The purpose of the gathering was to discuss what AI engagement should look like in K-12 schools. In attendance were a handful of Heads of independent schools representing students TK -12th grade, as well as an AI educational platform developer.
This topic is critical. AI is in all of our lives and its impact on society is harder and harder to ignore. Last year our staff were trained in the new AI units offered by Dopamind–the digital wellness program we utilize at Children’s Community School (CCS) to help students explore their relationship with technology. I sat in on one of the units in action last year. When asked by their teacher what they knew about AI, one second grader offered, “It’s dangerous because sometimes it shows you things that aren’t true.” Very accurate!
Learning with Effort
Early in the dinner discussion, we surfaced our fears and worries about the environmental impact of AI, privacy concerns, the tech industry's tendency to value profit over the protection of young people, and also the ease of cheating. We lamented the real possibility of taking the time to develop considered strategies, only to have the platforms in question evolve so quickly that those strategies become irrelevant, and grappled with the decline in long-format reading. It was acknowledged that some industries now expect employees to utilize AI for work and screen candidates based on their experience. The presence of Alpha School, an AI-based K-12 school, was also discussed. AI can bring efficiency, ease, and frictionless answers. What it can’t bring is challenge, perseverance, and the kind of social negotiation important for growth as a human.
In an article from Brookings titled, AI’s Future For Students Is In Our Hands, authors Mary Burns and Rebecca Winthrop write,
“AI’s ease of use and its reinforcing outcomes (improved grades with little effort), combined with human tendencies toward shortcuts and the transactional nature of schooling (completing assignments for grades), drive cognitive offloading and dependency, atrophying students’ learning—particularly their mastery of foundational knowledge and critical thinking. Young learners lacking this foundational knowledge remain especially vulnerable to accepting AI-generated misinformation as fact. These patterns weaken learning mindsets as students develop unrealistic expectations about learning ease, lack opportunities to develop resilience and grit, and become less willing to engage in the productive struggles that lead to authentic learning.”
How Progressive Education Prepares Students for the Future
I left the dinner encouraged and energized! Children’s Community School is designed to help students develop the cognitive, emotional, and social grit to thrive in today’s technological landscape. As we begin the new school year, here is how our students are exceptionally prepared for our evolving world.
Acquiring Knowledge Requires Action
Our students are required to contribute questions and ideas alongside their peers, with guidance from their teachers. They are the researchers seeking knowledge; reading texts, going on field trips, conducting experiments to uncover answers. Evidence is discussed in small and large groups to deepen understanding. Through this effort, they are also grappling with how to know if something is true and evaluating information critically. They are not just passively consuming facts from a lecture, worksheet, search engine, or chat responses.
Effort is Needed to Demonstrate Learning
At CCS, students work hard to present their knowledge with written reflections drafted in class, visual displays, songs, creative movement, plays, and mathematical equations. Activities like block building and woodworking are slow and deliberate. This type of assessment makes it impossible to cut corners or cheat. The presentations come together through the actions of individual students working in collaboration, and they are joyful. Culminations and Study Shares are so unique to the learners in that class and the context in which the learning was constructed; no two class demonstrations are the same-even if they were to study the same topic!
Learning in Community Presents Important Obstacles
Our intentionally diverse classrooms are made up of students with competing interests, perspectives, and needs. Students have to negotiate, consider the ideas of others, have patience, and be flexible. This is not a bug - it’s a feature of our school that teaches children how to navigate the complexities of working with others in the world. Conflict will arise. They learn explicit mediation skills through our Talk it Out program. As students spend more time working together, they learn that their peers have different superpowers that can benefit the group. Their relationships with teachers as partners in their education give students the skills and confidence to speak to anyone and advocate for themselves and others outside of school. They know how to work in teams and overcome obstacles that might arise. With the trust they build through relationships, students are comfortable taking risks and trying new skills. Alumni often talk about how the skills of problem-solving in community, learned at CCS, stay with them long past middle school.
Centering Humanity in a High-Tech World
Children’s Community School will continue to be a proud low-tech school. Students are introduced to Chromebooks in fifth grade with intentional supervision and scaffolding. We celebrate the cognitive muscles they’re developing, their mastery of foundational knowledge and critical thinking, as well as their ability to work fluidly with a variety of people. Our students are capable of perseverance when faced with challenges and will know how to center humanity when utilizing whatever technological tool that is available to them in the future.
